Opening HIP Files
The HIP file type is primarily associated with Houdini.
What is a HIP file
How can I open a HIP file?
You need a suitable software like Houdini to open a HIP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HIP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HIP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert HIP files:
- Houdini by SideFX
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. HIP files are often referred to as Houdini 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- HiP (compressed data) by Danilo B.HiP is a single file compressor implementing the HiP compression algorithm written by Danilo B. The program stored compressed data in files with HIP extension. This file format is classified as Compressed.
- Spy-CD (search database) by PHDCCSpy-CD was a full text search engine for finding words on web pages and PDF files. The program could use words, synonyms, and wildcards to perform both simple and logical searches. Spy-CD stored its search database in a HIP file. Note that this program is no longer available for download. This file format is classified as Database. Related links: Spy-CD Product Information
HIP format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the HIP files:
The HIP file extension is not common and includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 55% of all HIP files belong to Heavy Iron Package game archive data. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. HIP files are between 5 KB and 72 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The keywords .PCNT, DICT, HIPA, PACK, PFLG, PMOD, PVER, NTSC, AINF, PCRT, AHDR, ATOC, PLAT and Incredibles are typical for these files. The file name boot.hip or font.HIP is characteristic of these files.
- 10% of all HIP files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "<::" at the beginning. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 3 KB to 47 KB in size, with a median of 17 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: OCR and http://orthlib.ru.
All other HIP files (35%) have no consistent format, often e.g. Houdini Project and HIPS. Often described as sheet. You can get all the details of your HIP file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .hip file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for HIP File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a hip 3D scene is a special file format by SideFX and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with HIP files
- Associate the HIP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d scenes. Because only the current version supports the latest HIP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the SideFX manufacturer website after an available Houdini update.
- To make sure that your HIP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .HIP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
