What is an X3D file?

X3D files mostly belong to X3D-Edit by NPS. X3D is a file format for representing and communicating interactive 3D scenes and objects using XML. The Web3D Consortium developed X3D format as a successor to the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) format used to represent 3D graphics and animation in web browsers. An X3D file contains polygonal geometry, hierarchy, textures, materials, animation data, scripts, and hyperlinks which are rendered as 3D vector graphics animations or models. Although X3D file format uses XML encoding, it also supports classic VRML binary and JSON encoding. How to open an X3D file

You need a suitable software like X3D-Edit to open an X3D file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your X3D file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a X3D file directly in the browser:. The X3D extension is very commonly found and predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 80% of all X3D files are associated with Extensible 3D vector graphics files, which internally utilize the well-known XML format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. Most of these files are 3 KB to 15 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, Immersive, xmlns, <!DOCTYPE X3D PUBLIC "ISO//Web3D//DTD X3D 3.0//EN" "http://www.web3d.org/specifications/x3d-3.0.dtd">, profile, X3D profile and <X3D version="3.0". The following filename is common: Untitled.x3d. Files like these have the following tags: wtfix, hello, model, cube, mask, scene, world, snapshot and color.
• 6% of all X3D files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "00 00" at the beginning. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 6 KB and 190 KB in size. These files can be linked to casa, house and plan, and often include person-related information.
