All about IAM Files

The IAM file type is primarily associated with Inventor.

IAMFile Extension IAM
File extension: IAM
File type:  assembly model

What is an IAM file?

IAM files mostly belong to Inventor by Autodesk. An IAM file is an assembly model created with Inventor computer-aided design and engineering software. An assembly (IAM) is usually the model of a mechanical product saved in Compound Document format. It comprises parts and subassemblies linked through assembly relationships. A subassembly in an IAM file is a self-contained unit with its own collection of parts. Autodesk Viewer web application and Fusion 360 integrated CAD/CAM/CAE software environment can import and render an assembly model created with Inventor. The file may also be exported to assembly formats compatible with third-party programs.

How to open IAM files

You need a suitable software like Inventor to open an IAM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IAM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IAM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert IAM files:

  1. Inventor by Autodesk
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. IAM files are often referred to as Inventor cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Fusion 360 (assembly model) by Autodesk
Fusion 360 is a computer-aided design, manufacturing, and engineering software. It can be used to open, edit, and fabricate an assembly (AIM) model created with Inventor. This file format is classified as CAD.

IAM file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the IAM files comes to the following conclusion:

The IAM file ending predominantly uses a uniform format. The following file formats are most commonly found in IAM files:

All other IAM files (2%) have no uniform format. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your IAM file!

an iam assembly model is a special file format by Autodesk and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with IAM files

  • Associate the IAM file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open assembly models. Because only the current version supports the latest IAM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Autodesk manufacturer website after an available Inventor update.
  • To make sure that your IAM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .IAM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
