What is an ICNS file?

ICNS files mostly belong to macOS by Apple. An ICNS file contains multiple sizes of a single icon used by macOS. Each ICNS file contains 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 128x128, 256x256, and 512x512 pixels versions of the same icon. The images themselves are saved in PNG or JPEG2000 format. Finder uses an ICNS file as a file, folder, or application icon. The ICNS file for a given application is saved in the application's /Contents/Resources/ folder. The relative path to this file is set as the value of the CFBundleIconFile property in the info.plist file of an application package.

How can I open an ICNS file?

You need a suitable software like macOS from Apple to open an ICNS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
