INX file extension format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the INX files produces the following result:
The INX file extension is not found very often and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 25% of all INX files start with the bytes tÄ, crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. INX files are between 220 KB and 370 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as WS[//d, gWSl, q]}}aMm and q]}}aMmmQ=]]A-MM1. Examples of file names are Setup.inx.
- 20% of all INX files are associated with InstallShield Compiled Rules. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 160 KB with most files being between 130 KB and 260 KB in size. The files contain the following words: aLuZ and Copyright (c) 1990-1999 Stirling Technologies, Ltd. All Rights Reserved. The file name Setup.Inx is typical for these files.
All other INX files (55%) have different formats, frequently e.g. Inkscape extension descriptor and char. If you want to find out what your INX file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
