Opening a JAM File
The JAM file type is primarily associated with Figma FigJam.
What is a JAM file?
JAM files serve several purposes. The most common is a Figma FigJam file, which holds digital whiteboard and diagram data stored in a compressed (ZIP) format. Open these files with Figma’s FigJam tool available at Figma FigJam or via Figma online.
Other uses include:
- Game resource files used with the Sierra AGI Engine.
- Game data files for titles such as Grim Fandango (GOG) and LEGO Racers.
- Recording files from Line 6 Pod Farm.
- Apple binary plist files used in GarageBand projects.
FilExt.com note: Even though many JAM files share the same extension, the internal structure and purpose depend on the generating software. In some cases, renaming the file to .zip and extracting its contents can reveal more about its design elements.
How to open a JAM file
You need a suitable software like Figma FigJam to open a JAM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JAM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JAM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

JAM file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the JAM files:
The JAM file extension is not found very often and is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all JAM files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "fig-jam." at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 34 KB to 3 MB. The file type is very recent. The following keywords are characteristic: fig-jam. A usual file name is Untitled.jam. These files can be linked to flow, community, journey, user, charts and chart.
- 15% of all JAM files start with the magic bytes JAM, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 11 MB in size and range from 1 MB to 91 MB. The keywords none and JAM2 are typical for these files. A usual file name is IntrFram.JAM or LoadScrn.JAM.
All other JAM files (35%) have different formats, frequently e.g. FSTA. Sometimes used for project or config. Just click the "Choose your .jam file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your JAM file is.
