What is a KDB file?
KDB files mostly belong to KeePass Password Safe by Dominik Reichl. A KDB file is a password database created by KeePass Password Safe password management program. This file contains passwords, usernames/emails and the corresponding application names or web addresses for each password. A KDB file created by KeePass Password Safe is usually encrypted. It can be synchronized (or manually transferred) across multiple authorized computers to allow easier logins. KDB file extension format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. The KDB file type is a very commonly used file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 35% of all KDB files are associated with KeePass Password Safe database. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 1 KB to 37 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. An example of a file name is Database.kdb. Files like these are about keepass, pass, passwords, account and export, and usually contain person-related data.
- 30% of all KDB files have the same signature 7H. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 15 KB in size and range from 5 KB to 110 KB. The keywords X509KEY are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are key.kdb or plugin-key.kdb. Files like these have the following tags: cdkeystore.
