Opening an LPK File
The LPK file type is primarily associated with ArcGIS.
What is an LPK file?
- Main Usage: These data files store the Desktop map layer or group layer along with some information about it that can be imported into another map and hence can be used for sharing map layers with others. If a user wants to share a map layer on the web, these LPK data files can be uploaded on ArcGIS online service.
- Associations:
- Tecplot Layout Package: Tecplot, a data visualization and CFD post-processing software, also uses LPK file extension for files that stores its plot layout files along with data used for generating visuals. These files are mainly used for cataloguing image and large documents.
- Lazarus Package file: The LPK file extension is also associated with Lazarus, a cross-platform application development tool or Integrated Development Environment (IDE). These are basically package file that store archive data written in ASCII format. A Lazarus Package file is actually an installable component that is added to an IDE workspace.
How can I open an LPK file?
You need a suitable software like ArcGIS to open an LPK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LPK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LPK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

LPK file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the LPK files looks like this:
As a file extension, LPK isn't very common and covers different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in LPK files are:
- 45% of all LPK files store the data in the 7z file format. 7z is a compressed archive file format that supports several different data compression, encryption and pre-processing algorithms. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 10 MB with most files being between 280 KB and 100 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: (1v%f M*. The file name GIS_file_of_India_State,_District_and_Tehsil_Boundaries.lpk or USA_Zip_Code_Boundaries.lpk is typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to boundaries, district, tehsil, india, state, code, world and areas.
- 25% of all LPK files use the ZIP algorithm, the LPK file contains a number of compressed files. Such a ZIP file contains 3 to 40 files with names like 1d862f7d02e6008f4550188a31ca654f. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. LPK files are between 120 KB and 17 MB in size. These files are often associated with america, north and servo.
All other LPK files (30%) have different formats, such as Tecplot Layout Package and Lazarus Package. They are often associated with major, water, digit or zones. If you want to find out what your LPK file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for LPK File Extension
an lpk layer package is a special file format by ESRI and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with LPK files
- Associate the LPK file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open layer packages. Because only the current version supports the latest LPK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ESRI manufacturer website after an available ArcGIS update.
- To make sure that your LPK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .LPK file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
