What is an LZMA file

LZMA files mostly belong to 7-Zip by Igor Pavlov. The LZMA extension belongs to files that are compressed archives. LZMA is similar to the ZIP format which is also use to compress data in order to save utilized disk space.

• Algorithm: LZMA is named after the Lempel-Ziv-Markov chain-Algorithm. The algorithm that the format uses is based on LZ77 and LZ78 also known as LZ1 and LZ2.
• Features: The LZMA is primarily used for its ability to compress data faster than alternative formats such as RAR and ZIP. LZMA can also compress already compressed archives such as TAR and create files with the TAR.LZMA extension which is also known as a Compressed Tarball.
• Limitations: LZMA can only compress files that are under 256 MB in size. If you need to compress larger files, you will need to use the LZMA2 format and a utility such as 7-Zip that supports LZMA2. LZMA2 also uses a lot more system resources to compress and decompress its data.
• Compatibility: LZMA compression is widely available on the Unix platform. Linux and MacOS operating systems offer native support for the format. To open an LZMA file on Windows, you will need to use a utility such as WinZip or 7-Zip.

How to open LZMA files

You need a suitable software like 7-Zip to open an LZMA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
