Opening an MDC File
The MDC file type is primarily associated with Stimulsoft Reports.
What is an MDC file
An MDC file is not a single-type file. Its role depends on the software that created it. The most common use is as a Stimulsoft report file where the file holds report definitions using internal formats like XML or JSON. In this form the file stores the structure, queries, and layout needed to build a report in Stimulsoft Reports.
Other uses include:
- Measurement Data File: This type holds measurement data (for example, from mass spectrometry) from systems like Netzsch Proteus.
- Microsoft Dynamics Code File: Here the file contains compiled objects or code used in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or Dynamics NAV.
- 3D Model File: Some MDC files store 3D models created in 3D Studio Max, used in game development environments similar to the Quake III engine (as seen with Return to Castle Wolfenstein models).
- Media and Music Data File: In certain cases, they act as multitrack audio containers or hold music data similar to MIDI files.
- Data Cubes and Compressed Containers: Other instances include multidimensional cube files for business analytics or compressed multi-channel data containers (using formats like ZIP).
FilExt.com tips: If you have an MDC file, consider which application likely created it. For report files, use the Stimulsoft Report Designer (Stimulsoft). For measurement, modeling, or Dynamics-related files, use the corresponding software. You can also inspect the file by opening it in a text editor; the internal structure (for example, look for XML or JSON tags) will give clues to its origin.
How to open an MDC file
You need a suitable software like Stimulsoft Reports to open an MDC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MDC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MDC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MDC file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the MDC files produces the following result:
The file type with the extension 'MDC' covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 60% of all MDC files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. MDC files can be up to 15 MB in size, but are often around 18 KB - 1 MB. The file type was created recently. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?>, <ReportName>Report</ReportName>, <ReportAlias>Report</ReportAlias>, <StiSerializer version="1.0" application="StiDocument">, <ReportAu and <StiSerializer version="1.02" type="Net" application="StiDocument"> are typical for these files. The file name Report.mdc is characteristic of these files. Such files sometimes refer to invoice and bloods, and often include person-related information.
- 8% of all MDC files use the same file format, which have the signature BC 02. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 240 KB with most files being between 10 KB and 570 KB in size.
The remaining 32% of all MDC files are different files with different signatures, often, for example, MidiCo Karaoke, JSON, ZIP and PGA. Files like these are sometimes linked to labs, draft, folio or order. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your MDC file!

How to solve problems with MDC files
- Associate the MDC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open report documents. Because only the current version supports the latest MDC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Stimulsoft Reports update.
- To make sure that your MDC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MDC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
