All about MIN Files
The MIN file type is primarily associated with OrCAD PCB Designer.
What is a MIN file
How to open MIN files
You need a suitable software like OrCAD PCB Designer to open a MIN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MIN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MIN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MIN file format:
To find out what program is needed to open MIN files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the MIN files comes to the following conclusion:
The MIN file type is a very commonly used file extension and includes many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 6% of all MIN files are based on the well-known UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). The contents of these files can even be read by a human. MIN files can be up to 5 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 2 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. DEF WORK, DRAW, END, CLEAR, M219(TURRET AIR ON), EMPC, PS LC, [0,0], [3,121],0, PS LC, [0,0], [3,151] and (**** LOAD NEW PART ***).
- 6% of all MIN files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "(EMPC" at the beginning. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. Most of these files are 1 KB to 2 KB in size. The files contain the following words: EMPC, CLEAR, DEF WORK, DRAW, END, M219(TURRET AIR ON), (***** NEW PART *****), (***** START OF PROGRAM *****), PS LC, [0,0], [3,172],0, SPINDLE and VZOFZ. The file name P0001.MIN is typical for these files.
All other MIN files (88%) have no uniform format, often, for example, Okuma CNC program, JSON, Format, WPC, MPC and NTOP. Tagged as resource, strings, plugin, json, dmin, exported, okuma or vmin. If you want to find out which format your MIN file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .min file to analyze".
Technical Data for MIN File Extension
a min PCB layout is a special file format by Cadence and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MIN files
- Associate the MIN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open pcb layouts. Because only the current version supports the latest MIN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Cadence manufacturer website after an available OrCAD PCB Designer update.
- To make sure that your MIN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MIN file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
