What is an MNG file?

MNG files mostly belong to Irfanview by Irfan Skiljan. MNG (pronounced Ming) is an animated image file format that can store multiple bitmaps, PNG, or JNG images and display them frame-by-frame like an animated GIF file. A MNG file can store animations, complex still frames, slideshows, or single images stored in PNG or JNG format. The graphics contents of MNG files may be lossy or lossless, and the format is supported by image processing software such as Irfanview, XnView, GIMP, and QuickTime. MNG files also have a higher compression ratio than similar GIF files. The structure of MNG and PNG files are basically the same, however, MNG files have a different header. Most web servers and browsers do not support MNG format but the unofficial video/x-mng or image/x-mng Internet type may be used when a MNG file is embedded in the <embed> or <object> tag of a HTML document. PaintShop graphics editor typically saves animations in MNG format.

How can I open an MNG file?

You need a suitable software like Irfanview to open an MNG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MNG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MNG file directly in the browser:.
