What is an MNX file?

MNX files mostly belong to Firmware updater. MNX files come in two distinct types:

Firmware update: These files act as a Castor firmware update for Castor & Pollux mice. They contain binary instructions that modify or update the device’s operating code. Use only the official firmware updater to install these safely.

Compressed data file: In some cases, an MNX file is a ZIP compressed archive. This version is used as a FactSage Data File to store data in a compact format that can be extracted with standard archive tools like 7-Zip or WinZip.

How to open MNX files

You need a suitable software like Firmware updater to open an MNX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. MNX file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the MNX files produces the following result:

MNX is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes many different file formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 15% of all MNX files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "32 00 01 00 03 00 01 00" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 130 KB to 130 KB in size, with a median of 130 KB. A usual file name is castor_naos_firmware_2020-06-01.mnx. These files can be linked to firmware, castor and naos.
• 15% of all MNX files use ZIP compression, multiple files are compressed and combined into one MNX file. 1 to 50 compressed files are common. File names are e.g. controller.fn6 and img_1.jpg. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 4 KB to 3 MB. A usual file name is backup.mnx. Files like these are about vendedor and info.
