Opening MX Files

The MX file type is primarily associated with Mathematica.

MXFile Extension MX
File extension: MX
File type:  Wolfram Language serialized package

What is an MX file?

MX files mostly belong to Mathematica by Wolfram. MX is a Wolfram Language serialized package format used for the distribution of Wolfram Language packages. Wolfram Language is a general multi-paradigm computational language used by the symbolic computation program Mathematica.

  • File structure: MX is a binary file that stores arbitrary expressions in a serialized structure optimized for fast loading. It's read and written using commands: 'Import' or 'Get' opens an MX file, 'Export' serializes an arbitrary expression and saves it as an MX file.
  • Compatibility: MX files created in later versions of Wolfram cannot be used by earlier verions. Other than Mathematica, you can also use MATLAB to read MX files. When it comes to cross-platform compatibility MX files cannot be exchanged between operating systems that differ in $SystemWordLength.

How to open an MX file

You need a suitable software like Mathematica to open an MX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MX files:

  1. Mathematica by Wolfram
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MX files are often referred to as Mathematica developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. MATLAB (common matrix routines file) by MathWorks
MATLAB programming and computing environment from MathWorks. The MX file extension is associated with a common matrix routines file used with MATLAB. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: MATLAB on Wikipedia, MATLAB Video Tutorials

an mx Wolfram Language serialized package is a special file format by Wolfram and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with MX files

  • Associate the MX file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open wolfram language serialized packages. Because only the current version supports the latest MX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Wolfram manufacturer website after an available Mathematica update.
  • To make sure that your MX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .MX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
