Opening an NPC File
The NPC file type is primarily associated with Unity.
What is an NPC file?
Many are used to store non-player character data in video games. They hold details like configuration, appearance, and behavior that game engines need.
- Game Data: These files define characters for games such as Neverwinter Nights, Jedi Academy, Unity projects, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. They may use formats like .NET or UTF-8 and work with tools like TES5Edit or NpcEditor.
- Power & Network Data: Some NPC files record power consumption and network performance metrics, acting as data logs or meter files.
- Calibration Reports: A few are used for technical tasks such as calibration (for example, EIVA NaviSuite calibration reports; see EIVA).
- Encrypted Content: Others contain encrypted data, including PDF content and files related to modding (Nexus Mods reference).
FilExt.com tip: This file extension does not have a single standard; its purpose is defined by the software that created it. To open or view a NPC file, use the application or editor that matches its data type, such as a game editor for character files or a data analysis tool for technical logs.
How do you open NPC files?
You need a suitable software like Unity to open an NPC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NPC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NPC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

NPC file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the NPC files:
The NPC file extension is quite common and includes very many different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all NPC files use the same file format, which have the signature WEE. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are often between 12 KB and 120 KB in size. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The following keywords are characteristic: WEEK FROM. A common filename is 20180601.npc or 2020-06-01c1.npc. These files can be linked to pvgd.
- 10% of all NPC files save the data in .NET file format. The .NET format is used to save Microsoft .NET Framework objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a .NET object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. The content consists of binary data as well as text and words. The files are on average 990 bytes in size and range from 950 bytes to 1 KB. The keywords Assembly-CSharp, cAlignment, cAttackPriority, cBehaviour, cCarry, cGuilt, cIntelligence, cLightColorB, cLightColorG, cLightColorR, cLightRange, cMovement, cPlea, cReach and sCrime are typical for these files. Files like these have the following tags: woman and greave.
All other NPC files (75%) have no consistent format, such as UTF-8, GIMUD, UnityWeb, igZ, EIVA, pdGlhbDogRE and aff. These files sometimes refer to ghost, girl, seabed, compat, verif or stdetails. Just click the "Choose your .npc file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your NPC file is.

How to solve problems with NPC files
- Associate the NPC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open game data files. Because only the current version supports the latest NPC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Unity update.
- To make sure that your NPC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
