What is an NSB file

NSB files mostly belong to Gamebryo. NSB files are used in several distinct ways.
Main usage: They often represent a compiled game shader, known as NetImmerse Shader Bytecode, which is part of the Gamebryo game engine toolkit. This shader file is central to rendering effects in many games.
Other applications include:

Timetable Data: Some NSB files store timetable information used by systems from Nova Spektrum, such as the Norwegian School Timetable (Visma).

Session Backups: Other variants serve as backups for remote access sessions, as seen in BeyondTrust/Bomgar products (BeyondTrust).

Backup Files: A few NSB files function as backup files, for instance, those related to Nintendo Switch data. In these cases, some versions use zlib compression and are connected with applications like Nokia Suite Backup, NovaBACKUP, or the Nintendo Soundbank Tool.

How to open NSB files

You need a suitable software like Gamebryo to open an NSB file. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the NSB files is as follows:

The NSB file extension is not found very often and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 50% of all NSB files are based on the well-known GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. NSB files can be up to 260 KB in size, but are often around 7 KB - 150 KB. It is a modern file type.
• 15% of all NSB files have the same signature nsb. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 2 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Texture and This. A common filename is WeaponBase.NSB or AlphaTextureBlender.NSB. Files like these are about pgterrain and glow.

All other NSB files (35%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. BOMGARBACKUP. Files like these are sometimes linked to bomgar, timeplan, timeplaner, history, logged or schema.
