What is an OTS file?

OTS files mostly belong to LibreOffice Calc.

The OTS file format can serve different functions depending on its origin. It is most commonly a OpenDocument Spreadsheet Template. This file is essentially a ZIP archive that holds XML data to define a spreadsheet layout, including styles, structure, and formulas.
If your OTS file comes from LibreOffice Calc, it is a ready-to-use template that lets you start a new spreadsheet with preset configurations. More details are available on the LibreOffice website.
Other uses include:

  • Timestamp Proof File: Some OTS files are used to store proofs of timestamp data. These files are part of the OpenTimestamps project which helps verify when data existed. Learn more at the OpenTimestamps website.
  • Poker Tournament Summary File: A smaller share of OTS files uses a JSON structure to record details from poker tournaments. This format is used by Holdem Manager 3 and sometimes DriveHUD. Visit the Holdem Manager 3 website for further information.

FilExt.com tip: Each type uses its internal structure—ZIP for spreadsheet templates and JSON for poker summaries. Verifying the file header (for example, ZIP signature or JSON braces) helps in identifying its true purpose.

How to open OTS files

You need a suitable software like LibreOffice Calc to open an OTS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OTS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OTS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

OTS file format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the OTS files:

The OTS file extension is not common and includes different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

The remaining 30% of all OTS files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. OpenTimestamps proof. These files sometimes refer to quote. If you want to find out what your OTS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
