Opening an OVA File
The OVA file type is primarily associated with VirtualBox.
What is an OVA file?
The OVF format as specified in the standard allows a virtual machine to be described in XML language, specifying all the programs that will be installed and their configuration in the virtual machine instance. OVA virtual machines can be installed directly to instantiate the operating system with basic features just to run the software being distributed.
While the OVA standard is safe to use, the packaged files within the OVA file may contain malicious content, hence only run trusted OVA virtual machines.
OVA files can be opened with many programs including VirtualBox, Vmware, Vagrant, Hyper-V, KVM, Citrix Hypervisor and Red Hat Virtualization. Cloud based and other SaaS provides support OVA and OVF instances including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), IBM SmartCloud and Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager.
Other files associated with OVA include ISO, OVF, VHD, VHDX, AMI, QCOW2.
How to open OVA files
You need a suitable software like VirtualBox to open an OVA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OVA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OVA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert OVA files:
- VirtualBox by Oracle
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. OVA files are often referred to as VirtualBox compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Octava (musical score file) by ObtivObtiv Octave is a program used to create musical scores in German music notation. The program supports manual creation of musical scores using a mouse and keyboard, or by reading signals from a MIDI device. The program also supports advanced formatting options. OVA files are musical scores created using Octave. This file format is classified as Page Layout. Related links: Help manual, Links
- Web Studio (project page file) by Beach SoftwareWeb Studio is web design software developed by Beach Software for the Windows operating system. The company has since gone out of business, however, downloads are still available on the software website. The software uses the OVA extension for files containing a single project page. This file format is classified as Page Layout.
- Workstation (distribution software package file) by VMwareVMWare Workstation is a hosted hypervisor that runs on Windows x64 and Linux operating systems. This software allows users to set up virtual machines on a single physical machine, where each virtual machine can execute its own operating system. The program stores a distribution package in OVA files, which are TAR archives containing multiple files. This file format is classified as Compressed. OVA file extension format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the OVA files is as follows:
You will often come across the OVA file type. This is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 97% of all OVA files start with the magic bytes 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 3 GB in size and range from 510 MB to 16 GB. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: 0100640, 0000000 and 0000600. A usual file name is Mercedes_2019.ova. These files can be linked to ford, linux, toyota, kali, virtualbox, honda, jeep and fiat.
All other OVA files (3%) have no uniform format. These files sometimes refer to vauxhall, wrangler, peugeot, accord, mitsubishi, trucks, alfa or audi. If you want to find out what your OVA file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an ova distribution software package file is a special file format by Oracle and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with OVA files
- Associate the OVA file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open distribution software package files. Because only the current version supports the latest OVA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Oracle manufacturer website after an available VirtualBox update.
- To make sure that your OVA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .OVA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
