What is an OPA file?

OPA files mostly belong to Microsoft Office.

An OPA file can serve different roles. Its primary form is an office policy file used by Microsoft Office. This file stores policy settings and system configurations in UTF-16 (Little Endian) format, and is usually managed by Office administration tools.

How to open an OPA file

You need a suitable software like Microsoft Office to open an OPA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. OPA format details:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the OPA files comes to the following conclusion:

The OPA file extension is rather rarely used and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in OPA files are:

• 35% of all OPA files are based on the well-known UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 100 KB in size and range from 8 KB to 240 KB. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. The keywords ;// _lcid="1033" _version="12.0.4518", CATEGORY, CLASS USER and CLASS MACHINE are typical for these files. The file name access12.opa or word12.opa is characteristic of these files. Files like these are about excel, visio, groove, office, onent, outlk and proj.
• 15% of all OPA files are associated with Psion Object/OPL Output. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. OPA files can be up to 11 MB in size, but are often around 4 KB - 5 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: OPAA and KTX 11. A common filename is IN_SITU.OPA. These files are often associated with base, immersive, controller, module, diffuse, delmar and situ.
