All about PET Files
The PET file type is primarily associated with Puppy Linux.
What is a PET file?
- Puppy Linux: Also known as Puppy Linux Install Packages, PET files were developed by Barry Kauler for Puppy Linux, a light-weight Linux distribution. The PET abbreviation actually stands for Puppy's Extra Treats. PET files used by Puppy Linux are stored inside TGZ files with an md5sum checksum appended at the end. They are supported by a number of utilities in MacOS, Windows and Linux based systems.
- Game files: Other than being used to compress files into archives, the PET extension is also used by 3D model files. These are used by WangReal Engine games such as PAngya and White Day: A Labyrinth Named School. The 3D model stored in these files contains texture, bone, animation, mesh, and facial animation. PET files are often compressed in NOP and PAK archives. These files can only be opened using the games they are associated with.
How to open a PET file
You need a suitable software like Puppy Linux to open a PET file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PET file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PET file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PET file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the PET files:
As a file extension, PET isn't very common and includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 20% of all PET files store the data in the GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 14 KB and 20 MB in size. The file type is relatively new.
- 20% of all PET files start with the bytes 50 01 00 00, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. PET files are between 28 KB and 260 KB in size. These files are attributed to caxsp.
The remaining 60% of all PET files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. JSON, ProjectSerializer and zXZ. If you want to find out which format your PET file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .pet file to view".

How to solve problems with PET files
- Associate the PET file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open software installation packages. Because only the current version supports the latest PET file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Barry Kauler manufacturer website after an available Puppy Linux update.
- To make sure that your PET file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PET file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
