Opening PPTM Files
The PPTM file type is primarily associated with Power Point.
What is a PPTM file
- Main Use: Microsoft PowerPoint software is widely used to create and share business, educational or personal presentations. PowerPoint software uses PPTM files to save presentations with embedded macros, in a slideshow format. Macros are scripts (or lines of code denoting a sequence of mouse clicks and keystrokes) that facilitate automation of repetitive actions like creating a new slide in a previously saved format. PowerPoint software utilizes macros to accomplish tasks while the presentation runs, such as accessing and displaying other presentations, navigating to a particular slide depending on the responses of the audience to a particular question, or running an audio/video file information across various pages which can several data forms such as video, audio, text, animations, and pictures. PPTM files are identical to PPSM files in every aspect except that the PPTM files open by default in the editing mode whereas PPSM files directly open in the viewing mode when accessed using PowerPoint..
- Adoption: On Windows PCs and Macs, Microsoft PowerPoint is the best software to open, modify and run macro-enabled PPTM files as intended, as it completely supports the embedded macros in the slides, slide-formats, text, and image placement. There are other software mentioned below, which can open the PPTM presentations but might not run the embedded macros and display the slide-formatting differently. On Windows PCs, Corel Presentations, SoftMaker Office, OpenOffice Impress, and WPS Office Presentation can open these PPTM files. On macOS platforms, PPTM files can also be opened using Apple Keynote, OpenOffice Impress, and WPS Office Presentation. OpenOffice Impress and WPS Office Presentation can open PPTM files in Linux systems as well. Google Slides is an online tool that can open PPTM files.

PPTM file format details:
To view or edit PPTM files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the PPTM files:
PPTM is not a common file extension and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The following file formats are most commonly found in PPTM files:
- 95% of all PPTM files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one PPTM file. PPTM files contain from 51 to 210 compressed files. Common included file names are [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \docProps\thumbnail.jpeg, \ppt\_rels\presentation.xml.rels, \ppt\media\image1.jpeg, \ppt\media\image1.png, \ppt\presProps.xml, \ppt\presentation.xml, \ppt\slideLayouts\slideLayout1.xml, \ppt\tableStyles.xml and \ppt\viewProps.xml. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are 100 KB to 22 MB in size, with a median of 2 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. [Content_Types].xml. A usual file name is Forensics is fun.pptm. Such files are related to autosaved.
