If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the PXT files looks like this:

PXT is rarely used as a file extension and includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 15% of all PXT files start with the bytes 5D 00 00 80 00, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. A typical file size is 3 KB. Some examples of file names are makecode-trials-1-4.pxt.
• 15% of all PXT files start with the magic bytes Photodex Presenter Stream, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. PXT files can be up to 36 MB in size, but are often around 38 KB - 9 MB. The files contain the following words: JFIF, Photodex Presenter Stream, thumbnail and PFile written with.
