All about RAS Files

The RAS file type is primarily associated with XnView.

RASFile Extension RAS
File extension: RAS
File type:  black and white image

What is a RAS file?

RAS files mostly belong to XnView by XnSoft. RAS filename extension is associated with grayscale and RGB color images stored in Sun Raster file format. It was the native raster image file format for saving bitmapped images on SunOS operating system. RAS image file format is supported by image processing programs such as XnView and GIMP. RAS is also one of the filename extensions associated with CALS Raster Type 1 image file format. RAS files that are saved in CALS Raster format are bi-level images compressed using CCITT Group 4 compression. Max Payne, a 3D action-adventure video game, saves game data such as music, sounds, textures, level information, and models in RAS files. SmartLab Studio, a guidance software for SmartLab x-ray diffractometer, uses RAS as a data file format. The contents of these files include a header, measurements, temperature, and other x-ray diffraction data coded in text and/or binary format.

How to open RAS files

You need a suitable software like XnView to open a RAS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RAS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RAS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  2. GIMP (image) by The GIMP Team
GIMP is a free and open source raster graphics editor that is mainly used on Linux operating system. Windows and MacOS editions of GIMP are also available for free and it can be used to view, edit, and export images saved in Sun Raster (RAS) file format. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
  3. Max Payne (game data) by Rockstar

  5. rtcorr (sky subtracted data) by NOT
rtcorr is real-time photometry data correction program. It accepts a file as input and outputs RTP files. The RAS file generated by rtcorr contains the new sky subtracted data which is created when rtcorr receives RAW data as input. This file format is classified as Data.
  6. SmartLab Studio (x-ray powder diffraction analysis data) by Rigaku
SmartLab Studio is an x-ray diffractometer software for analyzing, measuring, visualizing, and reporting x-ray powder diffraction data. It stores various measurement, temperature, and displacement information in RAS files. This file format is classified as Data.

RAS file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below is our analysis of the RAS files:

The RAS file extension is used very often and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

The remaining 40% of all RAS files are files with no common format, often e.g. Sun Raster bitmap, srcdocid and SIG. These files sometimes refer to sample, andreeav, russian, polish, calss or kbpm. You can get all the details of your RAS file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .ras file to view this image" above.

a ras black and white image is a special file format by XnSoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with RAS files

  • Associate the RAS file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open black and white images. Because only the current version supports the latest RAS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the XnSoft manufacturer website after an available XnView update.
  • To make sure that your RAS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .RAS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
