Opening SAP Files
The SAP file type is primarily associated with SAP GUI.
What is a SAP file?
The SAP extension covers several distinct file types. The most common use is for a SAP GUI connection file that stores details used to link a client to a SAP system. These files hold network endpoints and shortcut settings that help manage access to SAP environments.
Other applications include:
- Role/Profile Files: Files that record user roles or transport requests, used in configuring access and security.
- Firmware Image Files: Files containing firmware data used with SAP Application Programming Interface tools.
- Audio Files: Some SAP files are designed for digital audio. They include Atari 8-bit music files and audio data formats compatible with software like Audacity.
- Analysis Report Files: Files used for SAP BusinessObjects Analysis reports that store data and layout information.
The file structure may be plain text in some cases and binary in others. To view or edit a specific SAP file, use the software that matches its purpose. For instance, SAP GUI is used for connection and role profile files, while Audacity can open files containing audio data. Further details can be found on the SAP website or the Audacity website.
FilExt.com tip: Keep in mind that even though the extension is the same, its content and functionality depend on the context in which it was created.

SAP file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the SAP files is as follows:
The SAP file extension includes different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 65% of all SAP files are based on the well-known config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are often between 240 bytes and 850 bytes in size. The file type is very recent. The keywords Name, [System], Client, [User], GuiParm, MYSAPSSO2 and AjExMDAgAA are typical for these files. An example of a file name is tx.sap. These files can be linked to work, item, execute, launch, workflow, display, inbox and appln.
- 4% of all SAP files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "SAP " at the beginning. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. A typical file size is 6 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. AUTHOR, DATE, NAME, PLAYER, TIME, INIT and TYPE B. Such SAP files store data about mario.
All other SAP files (31%) have different formats, frequently e.g. Serif AlbumPlus album, SAP Thomson disk image and DATE. Files like these are sometimes linked to save. You can get all the details of your SAP file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .sap file to play" above.
