What is an SBX file?

SBX files mostly belong to ArcGIS by Esri. Files containing the SBX extension have various associations;

Illustrator Tsume files: Files that have an SBX extension are created by Illustrator, a vector-based drawing and graphics designing application from Adobe systems. This format is used to store spacing for Korean and Chinese characters and fonts. These characters usually have the same kind of single-spacing between them but when using Illustrator it converts to a comparative wideness of the character. SBX files lately have been utilized by malicious software due to the nature of Illustrator executions and should be regarded with suspicion.

How do you open SBX files?

You need a suitable software like ArcGIS to open an SBX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The SBX file extension is very common and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:

85% of all SBX files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 27 0A FF FF FE 70. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 110 bytes to 3 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. Files like these are about area, boundary, teren, nakveti, migrashim, parcels, export, jalan, plan and topo.
4% of all SBX files use the ZIP algorithm, multiple files are compressed and combined into one SBX file. The number of files included is on average 5 and ranges from 4 to 7. File names are e.g. 1.png, 1.wav and project.json. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. SBX files are between 5 KB and 190 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. project.json. These files are often associated with chameleon.

How to solve problems with SBX files

Associate the SBX file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open spatial index files. Because only the current version supports the latest SBX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Esri manufacturer website after an available ArcGIS update.
