Opening an SBX File

The SBX file type is primarily associated with ArcGIS.

SBXFile Extension SBX
File extension: SBX
File type:  spatial index file

What is an SBX file?

SBX files mostly belong to ArcGIS by Esri. Files containing the SBX extension have various associations;

  • Illustrator Tsume files: Files that have an SBX extension are created by Illustrator, a vector-based drawing and graphics designing application from Adobe systems. This format is used to store spacing for Korean and Chinese characters and fonts. These characters usually have the same kind of single-spacing between them but when using Illustrator it converts to a comparative wideness of the character. SBX files lately have been utilized by malicious software due to the nature of Illustrator executions and should be regarded with suspicion.
  • GLBasic Shoebox files: SBX files are associated with Shoebox, an archive contained in GLBasic utilities. This compression archive file contains the program's utilities such as graphics and video assets in a compressed format.
  • SeqBox file: SBX is a Sequence Box (SeqBox) package file built by SBX Enc, which is a software that is meant to protect a customer's files against breakdown of setups and data damage. SBX documents contain files that have SBX Enc encryption. The files contain a package that stores information about its marker, chunk sequence, and version.

How do you open SBX files?

You need a suitable software like ArcGIS to open an SBX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SBX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SBX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SBX files:

  1. ArcGIS by Esri
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SBX files are often referred to as ArcGIS gis because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. GLBasic SDK (compressed archive file) by Dream Design
GLBasic SDK is the standard collection of software development tools for the GLBasic language. Shoebox is a file archiving tool in GLBasic SDK, which can be used to compress resources for an application that is being developed. SBX is the file format for a compressed archive created using Shoebox. This file format is classified as Compressed. Related links: GLBasic (Language) on Wikipedia, Shoebox Tool in GLBasic
  3. Illustrator (tsume file) by Adobe
Illustrator is a vector graphics software from Adobe that is a part of the Creative Cloud suite of applications. An SBX file in Illustrator accompanies certain Asian font files. It contains kerning data for Asian characters that allows proportional spacing (as opposed to monospaced fonts). This file format is classified as Data. 4. ScratchX (Scratch Experimental Extensions project) by MIT Media Lab
ScratchX is a platform for testing Experimental Extensions that are created for Scratch using JavaScript. Scratch is a Visual Programming Language (VPL). An SBX file is a Scratch Experimental Extensions project created by ScratchX. The project allows Scratch to interface with hardware. This file format is classified as Developer. 5. SeqBox (Sequenced Box container file) by Marco Pontello
SeqBox is a file recovery solution that creates a standalone container that can be reconstructed even after complete loss of file system structure. It includes four tools, SBXEnc (encoder), SBXDec (decoder), SBXScan (file scanner), and SBXReco (recovery tool). SBX is the format for the encoded Sequenced Box container file created using the SBXEnc tool. This file format is classified as Encoded. Related links: SeqBox Repository, SeqBox Review

SBX file format:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the SBX files:

The SBX file extension is very common and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:

All other SBX files (11%) have no uniform format, the following 5 formats can be found: GZIP, XML and div. Often described as line, screenplay, districts, kchulim, output, kavim, local, zones, city, clip or poly. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your SBX file!

an sbx spatial index file is a special file format by Esri and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with SBX files

  • Associate the SBX file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open spatial index files. Because only the current version supports the latest SBX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Esri manufacturer website after an available ArcGIS update.
