Opening an SD File

The SD file type is primarily associated with ArcGIS Pro.

What is an SD file?

SD files mostly belong to ArcGIS Pro. Your SD file does not refer to one single format. Instead, it is a file extension that various programs have adopted for different purposes. Depending on its origin, a SD file might contain spatial data, game assets, scientific measurements, backups, or even executable code.
Here are some common uses observed:

  • GIS Data: Some SD files are ArcGIS Scene Documents. They use a 7z‐style internal format to store scene and spatial data. Such files are opened with ArcGIS Pro. See more details here.
  • Game Data: In other cases, the SD extension appears on game data. Examples include Sega Dreamcast save files and Unity game asset files (using the UnityFS format). These files help store game progress or in–game assets.
  • Scientific Measurements: Some files labeled as SD hold UV–Vis spectroscopy data. These are used in lab settings and are supported by software like OriginLab Origin; further information can be found here.
  • Simulation and Backup Files: Other applications include Train Simulator asset files (often encoded in UTF–16) and browser bookmark backups (compressed with ZIP). Additionally, there are instances where the file is set up as a Windows executable for strategy applications related to trading platforms like MetaTrader 4 (visit here).
  • Miscellaneous Uses: Beyond the above, some SD files serve as disk images (e.g., initramfs archives), JPEG or PNG image files with metadata (sometimes linked to art tools like Stable Diffusion), sonar survey data, Garmin GPS data, or even audio files used in sound design. Each context uses its own internal encoding or compression (such as 7z, ZIP, EXE, UnityFS, and others).

FilExt.com note: Because the SD extension is not standardized, you should verify the file’s origin—often by checking its header or using a file analyzer—to determine the appropriate program for opening it.

How do you open SD files?

You need a suitable software like ArcGIS Pro to open an SD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SD files:

  1. ArcGIS Pro
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SD files are often referred to as ArcGIS Pro gis because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Entropic Sound Data Format
  3. Insight II (Structure Data File) by Accelrys Software Inc.
Insight II is a molecular modeling environment that provides a graphical interface to algorithms for molecular dynamics, homology modeling, de novo design, and electrostatics.
  4. MDL Molfile (MDL Structure Data) by MDL Information Systems, Inc.
The Mime types used with this association are: chemical/x-mdl-sdfile.
  5. Mechanical Toys (Drawing or Plan) by Focus Educational Ltd
Mechanical Toys is designed as a teaching aid and student research tool for Key Stage 2 and 3 mechanical toy projects. The focus of the program is written with particular reference to the QCA Scheme of Work: Unit 5C.
  6. Quick Sequence Diagram Editor (Diagram) by Markus Strauch
Quick Sequence Diagram Editor is a tool for creating UML sequence diagrams from textual descriptions of objects and messages that follow a very easy syntax. It supports actors, constructors, destructors, threads and on-diagram comments that can be used to represent conditions or loops. Diagram preferences are applied only to the diagram currently being displayed. They are saved along with the diagram source when it is saved as an SDX file. When a diagram is saved as an SD file, these preferences will be lost. The Mime types used with this association are: text/xml. This file format is classified as XML.
  7. Simple Diary
  8. Sound Designer Audio
  9. Train Simulator (Shape Definition File) by Microsoft Corporation
A realistic experience of rail equipment brought to the PC - placing you in the cab of each detailed locomotive, with accurate, fully-functional gauges and working controls that you manipulate. Whether it's working the regulator on a steam engine or the air brake system on a modern diesel, you are in control. Standard text file opened in Wordpad. The file links to the .S file for the shape that it refers to.

SD format details:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the SD files is as follows:

Files with the SD extension are quite widely used. This file type covers a large number of different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 70% of all SD files are files with no common format, often e.g. ZIP, UTF-16 (LE), UnityFS, REGISTER, TDR and STL. They are often associated with loco, desligamentos, chrenova, nitra, vetva or strategy. You can get all the details of your SD file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .sd file to analyze" above.

an sd data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with SD files

  • Associate the SD file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest SD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ArcGIS Pro update.
  • To make sure that your SD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .SD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
