What is a SEG file

SEG files mostly belong to ImageJ. SEG files store segmentation data used in many specialized fields. Their content depends on context and can include segmented image masks, genomic copy number variations, 3D model parts, seismic survey layers, or audio/speech segments.

Image segmentation: These files hold data that divides images into regions. They are used in analysis programs such as ImageJ and sometimes are known as segmented image or image segmentation data files.

How do you open SEG files?

You need a suitable software like ImageJ to open a SEG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. SEG file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the SEG files comes to the following conclusion:

Files with the SEG extension are quite widely used. This file type includes many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:

• 10% of all SEG files start with the bytes format ascii cr, which are crucial for this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. SEG files are between 11 KB and 27 KB in size. The file type was primarily used more than 10 years ago. The following keywords are characteristic: data, flipflop 0, format ascii cr, invert 0, gray 0, height 481, width 321, user 1102, segments 12, 0 0 0 320, 0 1 0 320, height 321 and width 481. The following filename is common: 33039.seg or 22093.seg.
• 5% of all SEG files use the same file format, which have the signature ID. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. Most of these files are 3 KB to 30 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. chrom, loc.end, loc.start, num.mark and seg.mean. The file name data_cna_hg19.seg is characteristic of these files. Such files are related to data, commpass, mmrf, segments and exome.

All other SEG files (85%) have no uniform format, often, for example, SEG-2 data, GZIP, chrM, image, CLIENT, seg and cluster. Tagged as archive, video, called, laptops, gold, name or show.
