What is an SFS file?

SFS files mostly belong to SquashFS. SFS files are used for several very different purposes. How they work depends on the software that created them.

SquashFS compressed file: The largest group uses SFS as a Squash File System archive. These files store a complete, compressed read-only file system. They are common in Linux and embedded systems. Tools like unsquashfs can extract these files. For more details, visit SquashFS.

Game save and data files: Some SFS files are used to record game progress and store game data. Titles such as SimpleRockets 2 and Kerbal Space Program use them to save a game session or keep game assets. Opening these files typically requires the game itself.

Scientific and report files: A few SFS files serve as containers for scientific data or formatted reports. For example, the Stereo Investigator system uses a variant (SIS2) for a scientific data format, and FastReport produces SFS reports. These require the corresponding vendor software.

Audio files and backup archives: In some cases, SFS stands for Sound File Stream or Sound File Format (used in Sound Forge), and a few files use a ZIP compression method for backup archives. Specialized audio or archive software is needed for these.

How to open SFS files

You need a suitable software like SquashFS to open an SFS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SFS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SFS file directly in the browser:. SFS file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the SFS files produces the following result:

The file type with the extension 'SFS' covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all SFS files are SquashSF image files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 24 MB to 1 GB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The keywords hsqs are typical for these files. The following filename is common: system.sfs or airootfs.sfs. Files like these are about puppy, devx, desktopfs, slaxen, upupbb and lupu.
• 15% of all SFS files use the same file format, which have the signature GAME. The contents of these files are partially readable by a human. The average file size is 270 KB with most files being between 30 KB and 2 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as GAME, Title, version, Status = 1, linkCaption =, linkURL =, Seed, Description = No description available, Mode = CAREER, scene = 5 and SANDBOX. Examples of file names are persistent.sfs or persistent (2020_06_01 10_30).sfs. Files like these have the following tags: quicksave.

All other SFS files (55%) have no uniform format, the following 8 formats exist: Maddox Games data archive, Single File System container, sfxr Sample, SIS and TPF.
