Opening an SLL File
The SLL file type is primarily associated with Cincom Smalltalk.
What is an SLL file
Dymo Smart Label Files:
Other SLL files are used in designing labels for Dymo LabelWriter systems. They use a Microsoft Compound file structure to hold layout and formatting details for Smart Label templates. More details can be found at Dymo.
Important: These two file types are not interchangeable. Use the official software provided for each version to open and view the contents.
- Backup your file before editing.
- Use the designated Visual Smalltalk or Dymo software to access the file.
- Avoid simple text editors for viewing these proprietary formats.
How to open an SLL file
You need a suitable software like Cincom Smalltalk to open an SLL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SLL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SLL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SLL files:
- Cincom Smalltalk
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SLL files are often referred to as Cincom Smalltalk developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- SmalltalkSimilar to .DLL files, these libraries contain Smalltalk functions.
- Sound FileThis file format is classified as Audio.
- Spreadsheet Load Library(part of Microsoft Office Web Components)
- Static Link LibraryStatic Link Libraries were sometimes used in DOS and Windows 3.x days. They are still used during the compile process by some compilers. Visual C++, for example, allows you to compile many different functions that you use often into a Static Link Library. Calls to these functions are then placed into the source code and, during the compile process, the SLL is read and the functions included in the final program.
SLL file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the SLL files produces the following result:
The SLL file extension is rarely used and covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 55% of all SLL files are associated with Visual Smalltalk Enterprise objects Library. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. SLL files can be up to 4 MB in size, but are often around 23 KB - 560 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. The keywords VOL1000w, Visual Smalltalk and License are typical for these files. The file name a7_licmang.sll is characteristic of these files. Such files sometimes refer to license and licmang.
- 35% of all SLL files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The file contains sections Categories, Format Index, Formats, Index, Labels, Return Address Index, Return Addresses, TBFormats and Version. A typical file size is 2 MB. Some examples of file names are labels.sll.
All other SLL files (10%) have different formats. If you want to find out what your SLL file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for SLL File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

an sll proprietary data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SLL files
- Associate the SLL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open proprietary data files. Because only the current version supports the latest SLL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Cincom Smalltalk update.
- To make sure that your SLL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SLL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
