What is an SMT file?

SMT files mostly belong to Fusion 360 by Autodesk. SMT stands for Autodesk ShapeManager Text file. The SMT file format was developed for Autodesk ShapeManager. Autodesk ShapeManager is a 3D geometric modelling kernel from Autodesk that was originally forked from the ACIS 7.0 kernel licensed from Spatial, a division of Dassault Systèmes. Autodesk ShapeManager is the modelling kernel for different Autodesk products, including Inventor, AutoCAD, and Fusion 360. An SMT file stores 3D geometry information about a CAD model. These files allow high-fidelity data exchange between different CAD applications that support the format. Autodesk ShapeManager files have two variations. SMT files are simple text format files that can be opened in any text editor. SMB (ShapeManager Binary) files are binary format files that can only be opened by CAD applications that support the format. To import an SMT file in Inventor, click on Open in the Get Started tab. Then select SMT from the Files of Type drop-down list. Select the desired file and click on Open.

How to open an SMT file

You need a suitable software like Fusion 360 to open an SMT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SMT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SMT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SMT file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the SMT files:

SMT is not a commonly used file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

All other SMT files (60%) have no uniform format, often, for example, ZIP. They are often associated with trace, spiderverse, samata or boot. If you want to find out what your SMT file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with SMT files

  • Associate the SMT file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open shape manager text files. Because only the current version supports the latest SMT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Autodesk manufacturer website after an available Fusion 360 update.
  • To make sure that your SMT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .SMT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
