What is an SSM file?

SSM files mostly belong to Ocean Optics SpectraSuite. SSM files are data files that serve several distinct functions. They are not tied to a single application but vary by origin.

How do you open SSM files?

You need a suitable software like Ocean Optics SpectraSuite to open an SSM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open SSM files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the SSM files:

The SSM file extension is not found very often and is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 40% of all SSM files start with the magic bytes " File: , which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain text and words, not binary data. Most of these files are 6 KB to 38 KB in size. The file type was created recently. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. File, SCOPE-, Time, Wave, 1 Xtrig, 1050 Val, off SNAP Xt and Users. These files are attributed to wattrot, xweiss, xfarredd, xgrn, gelblang, laser and micro.
• 15% of all SSM files start with the bytes SSM, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 71 KB. The keywords !Thiw-, picn, OS mode and cannot be run i are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are picn1020.ssm or picn6520.ssm.
