Opening an STA File
The STA file type is primarily associated with Multiple specialized tools.
What is an STA file?
For example, one common use is as a station configuration file that stores antenna settings and measurement information. These files sometimes use ZIP compression internally to package the configuration data.
In other cases, a STA file holds statistical data for analysis. Software like Statistica or Stata may use this format to archive data arrays for research and computation.
Financial programs also generate STA files as bank statements. These files record transaction details and bank balances and are seen in formats associated with SWIFT bank statements, MultiCash, StarMoney (which can be viewed with MT940 viewers such as those found on the StarMoney site), and ABN AMRO reporting systems.
Engineering and simulation tools sometimes use STA files to log status or simulation results. For instance, Abaqus/Standard writes a STA file to capture analysis progress, and similar files appear in projects managed by Materials Studio or SQLite-based applications (Abaqus and SQLite).
Other specialized uses include wind measurement data files produced by instruments like Windcube for LiDAR analysis in renewable energy projects (more information is available at Vaisala) and data files from spectrum analyzers (such as those from Anritsu, detailed on their website).
FilExt.com note: The software needed to open a STA file will depend on which format it uses. Checking the file’s header or metadata (perhaps with a simple text editor) can reveal clues about its origin, so you can use the proper application to view or edit it.
How do you open STA files?
You need a suitable software like Multiple specialized tools to open an STA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your STA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a STA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert STA files:
- Multiple specialized tools
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. STA files are often referred to as Multiple specialized tools data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Abaqus/CAE (Information Summary File) by Dassault SystèmesAbaqus/CAE is a complete solution for Abaqus finite element modeling, visualization, and process automation. CAE creates the .inp file which you can edit and run by the command line, or you can submit jobs from within CAE. Other files are .cae (CAE model file), .odb, .dat, .log, .msg, and .sta. The .dat is the text output file that will contain results. The .odb file is the binary output file that will be read during post-processing to view graphical results. The .log file keeps a text record of all processes and is useful for checking the status of the analysis. The .msg lists the progress of the analysis, as well as provides some messages about why an analysis might have crashed (this information is often within the .dat file as well). The .sta file is a summary of the information contained in the .msg file, and is useful for monitoring the status of long-running jobs during their computation

STA format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the STA files looks like this:
The STA extension is quite commonly used. The file itself does not have a uniform file format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 15% of all STA files use ZIP compression, so several files are combined and compressed into one STA file. 4 to 9 compressed files are common. Customary file names are CalsetLibrary, MainForm, checksum, \afd17ff5-37c9-447b-8670-f81178e9b403\State.xml and \afd17ff5-37c9-447b-8670-f81178e9b403\catCable.xml. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 16 KB to 170 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as CalsetLibrary, checksum and MainForm. Files like these are sometimes connected to auto, datalink and upper.
- 10% of all STA files have the same signature :20:. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The average file size is 5 KB with most files being between 570 bytes and 38 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as :20:QNBAEGCXAXXX. A common filename is 20180601_20180601.sta or 20180601_20180601 (1).sta.
The remaining 75% of all STA files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. Complete Statistica System spreadsheet, MAME Save State, CAP, DOC, ABNANL, Abaqus and HeaderSize. Files like these are sometimes linked to state, statement, bwmda, progress, cplex or user. You can get all the details of your STA file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .sta file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with STA files
- Associate the STA file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest STA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Multiple specialized tools update.
- To make sure that your STA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .STA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
