Opening STS Files
The STS file type is primarily associated with Spintires MudRunner.
What is an STS file?
- Game Data: Some STS files are used by Spintires MudRunner to save map and level progress.
- Configuration Settings: Other files use ZIP or XML formats to hold secure token service configurations or tool settings. In one case, the XML-based STS file is managed by an application called STS Tool. For more details, visit STS Tool.
- Business and Design Data: Certain systems use STS files to store items like Russian tax returns (for example, in Sage 50 Accounts) or sewing pattern data via Trimble Business Center. Information is available at Sage.
- Scientific and Diagnostic Data: Other uses include storing spacecraft telemetry data (linked to the MAVEN mission at MAVEN), PCB drill instructions from layout software, and even logs such as Serial SCSI traces or car diagnostic data.
- Media Presets: In some cases, STS files save audio presets (for example, from Orban Optimod) or sample data for musical notation in StaffPad.
FilExt.com notes: Each file is application specific and must be viewed or edited with the software that created it. If the file is XML-based or compressed (ZIP), a simple text editor or archive tool might let you examine its contents. Always check the file’s origin before attempting modifications.

STS file format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the STS files:
Files with the STS extension are quite widely used. This file type is used by many programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 9% of all STS files start with the magic bytes ¹ï3, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 660 KB to 4 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. The file type was created recently. A usual file name is _multiplayer.sts or level_plains.sts. Such STS files store data about level, multiplayer, plains and coast.
- 7% of all STS files use the ZIP format, i.e. an STS file contains several compressed files. The number of files included is on average 1 and ranges from 1 to 170. Customary file names are 1.sts. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 19 KB to 1 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: 1.sts.
All other STS files (84%) have no consistent format, the following 14 formats exist: Microsoft C/C, XML, wDU, OBJECT, ARS, ELECTRA, Copyright and TST. Often described as save, smash, saved, state, flood, prokaraoke, quicksave, seclannms, statistic, global, auto, func or mesa. How to solve problems with STS files
- Associate the STS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open specialized data files. Because only the current version supports the latest STS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Spintires MudRunner update.
- To make sure that your STS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .STS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
