Opening an SV$ File
The SV$ file type is primarily associated with AutoCAD.
What is an SV$ file?
- AutoCAD autosave: An SV$ file in AutoCAD holds a backup of a CAD drawing. In a crash, you may recover unsaved changes by renaming the file and opening it in AutoCAD. More details are available at AutoCAD Overview.
- 3ds Max autosave: Some SV$ files are used with Autodesk 3ds Max. They save scene data automatically using a Microsoft Compound file format. Visit 3ds Max Overview for more information.
FilExt.com tips: This file is not meant for regular editing. It exists to help recover work quickly after a failure. The file is stored in a temporary folder and is often deleted once you save normally.
How to open SV$ files
You need a suitable software like AutoCAD to open an SV$ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SV$ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SV$ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SV$ files:
- AutoCAD
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SV$ files are often referred to as AutoCAD backups because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- AutoCAD (Autosave File) by Autodesk, Inc.Program ID is AutoCADAutosaveDrawing, AutoCADLTAutosaveDrawing
SV$ file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the SV$ files looks like this:
The SV$ file ending is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 85% of all SV$ files start with the bytes AC10, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 3 MB in size and range from 180 KB to 13 MB. The file type is a fairly new file format. The keywords AC1032 are typical for these files. These files are often associated with drawing, plan, floor, details, recover, site, control and plans.
- 10% of all SV$ files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). There is also a globally unique identifier 1cdd8c7b-81c0-45a0-9fed-04143144cc1e. Sections and streams in the file have names like SaveConfigData, Scene, ClassData, ClassDirectory3, Config, DllDirectory, DocumentSummaryInformation, FileAssetMetaData3, ScriptedCustAttribDefs, SummaryInformation and VideoPostQueue. The files are 1 MB to 590 MB in size, with a median of 160 MB. The following filename is common: AutoBackup01.max.sv$ or AutoBackup02.max.sv$.
All other SV$ files (5%) have no uniform format. The category is room. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your SV$ file!
Technical Data for SV$ File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
an sv$ Backup file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SV$ files
- Associate the SV$ file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open backup files. Because only the current version supports the latest SV$ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available AutoCAD update.
- To make sure that your SV$ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SV$ file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
