What is a TLP file?
Other variants exist:
How to open a TLP file
You need a suitable software like Bitvise SSH Client to open a TLP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TLP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TLP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TLP files:
- Bitvise SSH Client
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TLP files are often referred to as Bitvise SSH Client settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Project (Timeline File) by Microsoft Corporation
- Tunnelier (Profile) by Bitvise LimitedTunnelier is a SSH and SFTP client for Windows. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 00 00.
TLP file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the TLP files produces the following result:
The TLP file type mainly uses a special format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 75% of all TLP files belong to Tunnelier profile. These files are not pure binary files and are therefore readable and interpretable with a text editor. The files are 2 KB to 10 KB in size, with a median of 5 KB. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as bsdauth, Tunnelier 8.44 and xterm. These files are often associated with server, login, database, bitvise, profile, google, tunnel, cloud, core, live and prod.
- 4% of all TLP files start with the magic bytes 50 25 00 00 00 00 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. TLP files can be up to 8 KB in size, but are often around 120 bytes - 8 KB.
All other TLP files (21%) have different formats, the following 5 formats can be found: Tulip graph format and streamtyped. Tagged as training, catprocess, ascent or openj. If you want to find out what your TLP file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with TLP files
- Associate the TLP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest TLP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Bitvise SSH Client update.
- To make sure that your TLP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
