Opening a TPD File
The TPD file type is primarily associated with Edius.
What is a TPD file?
For example, some files serve as the Edius preset database. In this role they hold effect settings and video presets for the Edius video editor.
Other uses include:
- 3D Printer Data: Some TPD files store project or print job information and are known as Trimble Data Files.
- Game Data: A group of these files is used by NetDragon Websoft; they act as game data packages. More details can be found at NetDragon.
- Configuration Files: Certain TPD files (such as those used with the Torpedo Traffic Generator) contain settings in an XML structure.
- Other Project Files: They may also appear as Blackmagic video files or 3D printer project files – see Blackmagic Design – and even as documents used in Turbo Pascal or ClarisWorks.
- Touch Panel Data: Some files store data for touch panel configurations.
FilExt.com notes: Depending on the originating software, the file’s content can be in XML format or stored as binary data. If you have a TPD file, you will need the application that created it to open or edit it properly. In some cases, if the file uses XML, you might open it with a text editor to inspect its structure, but advanced editing should be done using the proper software.
How to open a TPD file
You need a suitable software like Edius to open a TPD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TPD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TPD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TPD files:
- Edius
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TPD files are often referred to as Edius data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- EDIUS (EffectPreset File) by Thomson Inc dba Grass ValleyEDIUS nonlinear editing software is designed for any broadcast and postproduction environments, especially those with newer, tapeless forms of video recording and storage. EDIUS software offers real-time, multi-track, mixed-format editing, compositing, chroma keying, titling, and timeline output capabilities. In addition to the standard formats of the EDIUS family, it supports Infinity JPEG 2000, DVCPRO, P2, VariCam, Ikegami GigaFlash, MXF, XDCAM, and XDCAM EX video. It also supports all DV and HDV cameras and decks. This file is used for generating an effect in EDIUS video mixing.
- TreePad (Hypertext Database File) by FreebyteTreePad is a small personal database program, only 465 Kb in size. It allows you to store notes, E-mails, text, hyperlinks, etc. into one or multiple databases.
TPD file format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the TPD files is as follows:
The TPD file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all TPD files are based on the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. Most of these files are 4 KB to 4 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>, <chunk>, <data>, <fourcc>tpsd</fourcc>, <presetdatabase xmlns="http://www.canopus.com/ns/edius/presetdatabase"> and <version>2.0</version>. Examples of file names are RuckussFX.tpd. Files like these have the following tags: person-related data.
- 10% of all TPD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "00 00 00 00 47 40 00 10" at the beginning. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. Most of these files are 65 MB to 1 GB in size. A common filename is MOV_0001.tpd.
The remaining 70% of all TPD files are different files with different signatures, the following 5 formats can be found: NetDragonDatPkg and AAMVHFSS. They are often associated with mask. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your TPD file!
Technical Data for TPD File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a tpd data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with TPD files
- Associate the TPD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest TPD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Edius update.
- To make sure that your TPD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .TPD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
