All about VHDL Files

The VHDL file type is primarily associated with Quartus.

VHDLFile Extension VHDL
File extension: VHDL
File type:  hardware design script

What is a VHDL file?

VHDL files mostly belong to Quartus by Intel. VHDL is a programming language for designing, simulating, optimizing, and verifying digital systems such as Systems on a Chip, logic gates, and integrated circuits. VHDL is short for VHSIC Hardware Description Language. The language was standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. A hardware design script written in VHDL is saved in a VHD file. This script contains strongly typed statements representing a model which describes a logic circuit. Hardware development environments such as ModelSim, DirectVHDL, and Vivado have native VHDL support.

How can I open a VHDL file?

You need a suitable software like Quartus to open a VHDL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VHDL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VHDL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert VHDL files:

  1. Quartus by Intel
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. VHDL files are often referred to as Quartus developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. ModelSim (hardware design script) by Siemens
ModelSim is an electronic design automation software with a high-end hardware simulation kernel that supports VHDL and Verilog. Hardware design scripts written in VHDL are saved in VHD files. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: VHDL
  3. Vivado (hardware design script) by Xilinx
Vivado is an integrated hardware design and simulation environment. It uses VHSIC Hardware Description Language to model/simulate the hardware of a digital system. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: VHDL

a vhdl hardware design script is a special file format by Intel and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with VHDL files

  • Associate the VHDL file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open hardware design scripts. Because only the current version supports the latest VHDL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Intel manufacturer website after an available Quartus update.
  • To make sure that your VHDL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .VHDL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
