Opening VPN Files
The VPN file type is primarily associated with Shrew Soft VPN Client.
What is a VPN file?
VPN files:
Your VPN file is a configuration file used by different VPN clients to store connection settings.
It holds important network parameters like server addresses, ports, and encryption details to establish secure tunnels.
- Shrew Soft VPN Client: This file is used to load its connection parameters. More details can be found at OpenVPN.
- VPN Client Manager: Here, the settings are stored in a plain text (UTF-8) format. Check out this page for further info.
- Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client: In this case, the file is packaged in a ZIP format to protect the configuration data. Visit Cisco for support details.
FilExt.com note: These files contain sensitive information required for your secure VPN connection. Use the corresponding VPN client to open and modify them.
How do you open VPN files?
You need a suitable software like Shrew Soft VPN Client to open a VPN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VPN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VPN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

VPN file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the VPN files:
As a file extension, VPN isn't very common and includes different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 65% of all VPN files belong to Shrew VPN configuration. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 1.2 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: n:network-ike-port:500, n:network-mtu-size:1380, n:client-addr-auto:1, n:version:4, n:network-natt-port:4500, n:network-natt-rate:15, n:network-dpd-enable:1, n:network-frag-size:540 and n:client-banner-e. These files are attributed to planet, invpn, home and work.
- 15% of all VPN files use the ZIP format, that is, a VPN file includes multiple compressed files. Such a ZIP file contains 1 to 2 files with names like profile.ini. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The file size is in the range of 840 bytes to 3 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as profile.ini.
All other VPN files (20%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. UTF-8. These files are often connected to kykvpn. Just click the "Choose your .vpn file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your VPN file is.
