All about XA Files
The XA file type is primarily associated with XAPlay.
What is a XA file?
They often contain compressed audio streams, sometimes using a structure similar to the RIFF format.
- Most XA files are used in PlayStation 1 games for sound effects and music.
- Some variants use the RIFF method to organize compressed audio data.
- A small portion of XA files are not audio at all; they are Amiga executables packaged as an eXtended Archive format.
For instance, one version is linked to Microsoft Docs and another to a detailed MSDN API page.
If you need to open an XA file, use a specialized media player or emulator that supports PlayStation audio streams. For Amiga executable XA files, look for conversion tools or emulators made for that system.
FilExt.com tip: This file format shows how early developers balanced data size with sound quality on limited hardware.
How do you open XA files?
You need a suitable software like XAPlay to open a XA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

XA file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the XA files:
XA is seldom used as a file extension and includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all XA files are Maxis XA Audio files. They consist of unreadable binary data. The file size is in the range of 64 KB to 9 MB. The file type is very old and rarely used today. Some examples of file names are 01.XA. Such files are related to comm and jokerm.
- 20% of all XA files are based on the well-known RIFF file format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are often between 950 KB and 74 MB in size. The keywords CDXAfmt, data, RIFF and RIFF$ are typical for these files. These files can be linked to slus, zerobgm and voice.
All other XA files (50%) have no uniform format. The category is master or bass. If you want to find out what your XA file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a xa audio file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XA files
- Associate the XA file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open audio files. Because only the current version supports the latest XA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available XAPlay update.
- To make sure that your XA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
