What is a XA file?

XA files mostly belong to XAPlay. XA files are specialized container files that mainly hold audio data from older gaming systems, especially from the PlayStation.
They often contain compressed audio streams, sometimes using a structure similar to the RIFF format.

• Most XA files are used in PlayStation 1 games for sound effects and music.
• Some variants use the RIFF method to organize compressed audio data.
• A small portion of XA files are not audio at all; they are Amiga executables packaged as an eXtended Archive format.

How do you open XA files?

You need a suitable software like XAPlay to open a XA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. How to convert XA files to MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, AAC, AIFF, ...

XA is seldom used as a file extension and includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all XA files are Maxis XA Audio files. They consist of unreadable binary data. The file size is in the range of 64 KB to 9 MB. The file type is very old and rarely used today. Some examples of file names are 01.XA. Such files are related to comm and jokerm.
• 20% of all XA files are based on the well-known RIFF file format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are often between 950 KB and 74 MB in size. The keywords CDXAfmt, data, RIFF and RIFF$ are typical for these files. These files can be linked to slus, zerobgm and voice.
