Opening an XLR File
The XLR file type is primarily associated with Works.
What is an XLR file?
How do you open XLR files?
You need a suitable software like Works from Microsoft to open an XLR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XLR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XLR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

XLR file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the XLR files:
The XLR file extension is not common and is primarily used by a single program. The following file formats are most commonly found in XLR files:
- 98% of all XLR files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The globally unique identifier of this file type is 00020820-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The internal containers are called Workbook, WksSSChart and WksSSWorkBook. The files are on average 14 KB in size and range from 10 KB to 26 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Files like these have the following tags: list, loan, work, spreadsheet and sheet.
All other XLR files (2%) have different formats. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your XLR file!

How to solve problems with XLR files
- Associate the XLR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open spreadsheet/charts. Because only the current version supports the latest XLR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Works update.
- To make sure that your XLR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XLR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
