Opening XMI Files

The XMI file type is primarily associated with StarUML.

XMIFile Extension XMI
File extension: XMI
File type:  XML-based model file

What is an XMI file?

XMI files mostly belong to StarUML. XMI files are largely XML Metadata Interchange files used for exchanging model data among design tools.
They are text files written in XML that hold metadata and structural information for UML models and other system designs.
  • Model Exchange: Many UML tools like StarUML, ArgoUML, and Enterprise Architect produce and read these files.
  • Eclipse Integration: Frameworks such as the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) also use this format. For more details, visit this page.
  • Alternative Use: A smaller group uses XMI files as an extended MIDI format in music applications.
  • FilExt.com note: Although you can open an XMI file in any text editor, it is best used with modeling or UML software to preserve the structure and meaning. Few know that beyond storing design data, variations of XMI may use alternative descriptors like XML Model Interchange Format.

    How to open XMI files

You need a suitable software like StarUML to open an XMI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XMI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XMI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to extract texts from XMI files or capture a screenshot to PDF, JPG, DOCX, TXT, ...

If you want to extract texts from XMI file or capture a screenshot, you can use our free Online XMI File Viewer:
    1. To do so, click the "Choose your .xmi file to view" button above.
    2. After your file is opened in browser,
    3. click "Save as..." in the menu.
    4. Then choose the file format (e.g. JPG, PDF, DOCX, TXT, ...) you want.
    5. Your file will be converted and downloaded.

Programs that open and convert XMI files:

    1. StarUML
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XMI files are often referred to as StarUML developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. EverQuest File
    3. Winamp Extended MIDI File
    4. XMill (Compressed XML) by Dan Suciu, AT&T Labs-Research and Hartmut Liefke, University of Pennsylvania
XMill is a tool for compressing XML data based on a regrouping strategy. XMill groups XML text strings with respect to their meaning and exploits similarities between those text strings for compression. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 78, ASCII: x.
    5. XMIT File Format by IBM
The XMIT (short for TRANSMIT) command comes with all MVS systems that have TSO/E (Time Sharing Option) which is basically all MVS systems since the mid-1980s (including OS/390). The IBM HELP command for this is: "The TSO/E Interactive Data Transmission Facility TRANSMIT command allows you to send data sets or messages to persons on other MVS systems via Network Job Entry or directly to persons on your own system. You may transmit sequential and partitioned data sets that have the fixed, variable and undefined record formats." The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex [Position 3]: C9 D5 D4 D9 F0 F1. Related links: UnXMIT Information Exchange
    6. XML Metadata Interchange Format
The XML Metadata Interchange specification provides a standard format for describing UML model elements. Most UML tools contain functionality for exporting data in the XMI format. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 3C. Related links: Implemented by ArgoUML, Format Specification

    XMI file extension format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the XMI files looks like this:

The XMI file extension is quite common and predominantly uses a uniform format. The file formats most commonly found in XMI files are:

The remaining 10% of all XMI files are different files with different signatures, often, for example, Extended MIDI. These files are often connected to meta, export, hact, activity, models or result. Just click the "Choose your .xmi file to view" button on this page to find out what your XMI file is.

an xmi XML-based model file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with XMI files

    • Associate the XMI file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open xml-based model files. Because only the current version supports the latest XMI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available StarUML update.
    • To make sure that your XMI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
