What is an XMI file?

XMI files mostly belong to StarUML. XMI files are largely XML Metadata Interchange files used for exchanging model data among design tools.
They are text files written in XML that hold metadata and structural information for UML models and other system designs.

Model Exchange: Many UML tools like StarUML, ArgoUML, and Enterprise Architect produce and read these files.

Eclipse Integration: Frameworks such as the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) also use this format. For more details, visit this page.

Alternative Use: A smaller group uses XMI files as an extended MIDI format in music applications.

How to open XMI files

You need a suitable software like StarUML to open an XMI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XMI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XMI file directly in the browser:. XMI file extension format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). • 75% of all XMI files are XML Metadata Interchange files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. A typical file size is 89 KB. It is a modern file type. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. xmlns, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, documentation, http://schema.omg.org/spec/UML/, http://schema.omg.org/spec/XMI/2.1 and XMI xmi. The file name UML_Results.XMI is typical for these files. Files like these are about model, results, diagram, data, independent, platform, project, class and case.
• 15% of all XMI files have the same signature àÉÕÔÙðñ. The contents of these files are partially readable with a text editor. The file size is in the range of 30 KB to 8 MB.
