What is a YAML file

YAML files mostly belong to Visual Studio Code by Microsoft. A YAML file contains data written in YAML data serialization language. The contents of a YAML file are formatted using Python-style indentation. Development environments typically use YAML files to store build/installation configuration, dependency lists, templates, environment variables and/or static data (as found in JSON and XML documents). Any plain text editor may be used to create a YAML file. However, it's best to use an integrated development environment such as Visual Studio or Eclipse because they contain tools optimized for writing valid YAML documents. Programming languages such as Python, Ruby, JavaScript, and Java have libraries for parsing YAML files.

How to open a YAML file

You need a suitable software like Visual Studio Code to open a YAML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your YAML file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a YAML file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

YAML file extension format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the YAML files:

Files with the YAML extension are quite widely used. This file type includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in YAML files are:

All other YAML files (60%) have different formats, the following 10 formats can be found: xnbData, name, AWSTemplateFormatVersion and install. These files sometimes refer to settings, template, client, league, data, compose, docker, audit or coco. Just click the "Choose your .yaml file to view" button on this page to find out what your YAML file is.

How to solve problems with YAML files

  • Associate the YAML file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open application data files. Because only the current version supports the latest YAML file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Visual Studio Code update.
  • To make sure that your YAML file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
