Opening a ZONE File
The ZONE file type is primarily associated with Text Editor.
What is a ZONE file?
These files list the instructions for mapping domain names to IP addresses and also define other data such as mail servers. They are used in many DNS systems. For example, Microsoft 365 and cPanel use them, as do systems based on BIND and Google Cloud DNS. Some services, like Akamai Edge DNS, also rely on them.

If you cannot open your ZONE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ZONE file directly in the browser:. ZONE file extension format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the ZONE files:
As a file extension, ZONE isn't very common and includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all ZONE files use the popular UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are on average 270 bytes in size and range from 220 bytes to 680 bytes. The file type is a fairly new file format. The files contain the following words: autodiscover 3600, outlook, mail, protection, autodiscover 3600 IN CNAME autodiscover and ; Zone file for Microsoft 365 services - please append the data below to your zone file. Files like these are about raadhuis.
- 15% of all ZONE files start with the bytes @ 3600 IN A 216.239.32.21 @ 3600 IN A 216.239.34.21 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are often between 200 bytes and 200 bytes in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as @ 3600 IN A 216.239.32.21, @ 3600 IN A 216.239.34.21, @ 3600 IN A 216.239.36.21, googlehosted and www 3600 IN CNAME ghs.google.com.
All other ZONE files (45%) have no consistent format, such as File and TTL. These files sometimes refer to addr, arpa or marinepolis. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your ZONE file!
