What is an ABR file

ABR files mostly belong to Photoshop by Adobe. An ABR file contains shape, texture, and metadata definitions for custom brushes used to paint objects in Photoshop. This file is found in the \Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop\Presets\Brushes folder of a Windows machine. Adobe also provides ABR brushes that can be downloaded from their website. On some occasions, Windows editions of Photoshop are unable to import brushes created with the macOS edition.

How can I open an ABR file?

You need a suitable software like Photoshop from Adobe to open an ABR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. ABR is one of the most common file extensions and mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 90% of all ABR files belong to Adobe PhotoShop Brush. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The average file size is 4 MB with most files being between 69 KB and 39 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. 8BIMsamp. Files like these have the following tags: brushes, brush, photoshop, free, pack, hair, starter, watercolor and paint.
• 1% of all ABR files save the data in Mac2OSX file format. The Mac2OSX format is an AppleDouble format and originally used to store additional metadata on Unix systems. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 82 bytes to 1 KB in size. The keywords Mac OS X, ATTR, 8BBR8BIM and apple are typical for these files. The file name ._PLAYERDAYS24_BRUSH-PACK.abr is characteristic of these files. These files are attributed to playerdays.

All the rest of the ABR files (9%) have different formats, often, for example, XML, ZIP and SQL. Files like these are sometimes linked to smoke, tree, cartography, grunge, pencil, digital or water.
