What is an AKP file?

AKP files mostly belong to Awave Studio by FMJ. AKP is the filename extension of audio samples created by S5000, S6000, and Z-series samplers manufactured by Akai. A sampler is an electronic workstation that musicians and music producers can use to simulate various musical instruments by pressing the onboard buttons or software that comes with the sampler. An older AKP format derives from the Resource Interchange File Format used to store audio. Like RIFF, an AKP file is a collection of chunks. Each chunk starts with a 4-byte ASCII header and a 4-byte number that represents the chunk's length. Unlike RIFF, which requires a unique header for each chunk, AKP allows for duplicate chunk names. Chunks can store information such as tunings, waveforms, mods and sampler audio sources. These define the voice or the instrument using an audio sample and any complementary effects.

Trouble Opening a .AKP File? These Steps Will Help

Because .AKP files can originate from different programs, they aren't universally openable.

  1. Identify the Source: If received from a music producer, it may be an Akai sampler program. If it's compressed program data, it likely belongs to FMJ's Awave Studio.
  2. Check the Header: Open the file in a hex viewer to inspect the first bytes:
    • "PK" indicates a ZIP-based compressed archive.
    • Readable XML suggests a configuration file.
    • Binary gibberish usually means proprietary compressed data.
  3. Use the Original Software: The original program is usually required; try FMJ Awave Studio, Akai MPC software, or ask the sender if uncertain.
  4. Use this Webpage: Drag and drop your file into our viewer to detect the format, extract readable text, and preview when possible.
