What is a RIFF file?

RIFF files mostly belong to Groove Music by Microsoft. RIFF is one of the filename extensions associated with files stored in the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) developed by Microsoft and IBM. Although RIFF is a generic file container that can be used to store various kinds of data, it's specifically images created with Painter and audio/video files stored in RMID (MIDI-based) format that use RIFF filename extension. The layers, raster graphics data, brush strokes, color information, canvas, etc. that make up digital artworks (drawings and paintings) created by Painter can be saved in RIFF files. MIDI audio files may also be stored in the RIFF wrapper file format used by XAudio2 on Windows and Xbox platforms. WAV/WAV audio files are also stored in RIFF format.

How to open RIFF files

You need a suitable software like Groove Music to open a RIFF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
