What is an ATL file?

ATL files mostly belong to Artlantis by Abvent. A file with ATL file extension is a high-resolution 3D image created with Abvent's Artlantis Studio or Artlantis Render. An ATL file is primarily used to store 3D scenes but it can also contain virtual reality objects, panoramas, surfaces, and much more. The ATL file extension is also used for storing atlas documents used to improve the performance of business systems that use PROGNOSIS. A third use case of ATL file extension is with B&B Electronics' AutoTap software which stores automobile diagnostics data created by a car's control unit in an ATL file. A legacy package known as ATP Assembler programming language stores program source code in ATL files. On Windows platforms, screen readers like Dolphin's Hal can save program data in ATL files.

How can I open an ATL file?

You need a suitable software like Artlantis to open an ATL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit ATL files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the ATL files produces the following result:

The ATL file extension is used very often and includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 20% of all ATL files are Artlantis 3D scene files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. ATL files can be up to 390 MB in size, but are often around 1 MB - 70 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, Atl library, safe_version, <?Application name="Artlantis", <Atl.File>, Preview and file="5.0" min_version="5.1.0". Such files sometimes refer to artlantis, model and plan.
• 15% of all ATL files start with the magic bytes #__AW_Repository_Version, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. ATL files are between 28 KB and 2 MB in size. The files contain the following words: __AW_Product_Version, __AW_Repository_Version, #__AW_ATL_Locale 'eng_us.utf-8';, ActaName_2, RDate, ActaValue_1, AlGUIComment ("ActaName_1", AlGUIComment (ActaName_1 and RSavedAfterCheckOut. A common filename is export.atl. These files can be linked to load, master, rldm, conv, mart and ncts.

The remaining 65% of all ATL files are files with no common format, the following 15 formats exist: DOC, config, JSON, Software and Auto. Files like these are sometimes linked to license, audit, trail, outer, space, aydspltjm or backup.
