Opening a BASE File
The BASE file type is primarily associated with App-specific.
What is a BASE file?
For example, one use is as a user profile file that holds recommendation system ratings. Such files are seen in datasets like the MovieLens dataset.
Other BASE files are used to store game configuration data or backups. In these cases, games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4 save their settings in a BASE file. A similar role exists for configuration or backup files related to Bethesda games.
There are cases where BASE files act as a modding archive that contains game modification resources, for example, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Additionally, some instances contain media data. One record shows a file with a JFIF internal format, typical for a JPEG image used by programs like Photoshop. Others store structured data like a JSON-based compressed backup, for instance for Airtable, or function as a database file associated with OpenOffice Base (more info).
FilExt.com note: The usage of a BASE file depends on the source – it may be a configuration backup, user profile data, an archive for mods, an image file container, or even part of a database system.
How to open a BASE file
You need a suitable software like App-specific to open a BASE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BASE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BASE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert BASE files:
- App-specific
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. BASE files are often referred to as App-specific data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Apple II operating system
BASE format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the BASE files looks like this:
As a file extension, BASE isn't very common and includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 15% of all BASE files start with the bytes 31 09, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. Most of these files are 1 MB to 1.7 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: 878542960, 875071561 and 875072262. u1.base or ua.base is a typical file name.
- 20% of all BASE files store the data in the config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. BASE files are between 110 bytes and 21 KB in size. The keywords [General], sLanguage, STestFile, [Display] and uExterior Cell Buffer=36 are typical for these files. Examples of file names are Skyrim.ini.base or Fallout4.ini.base. Files like these are sometimes connected to morrowind.
All other BASE files (65%) have no consistent format, the following 6 formats exist: JFIF and UnityFS. The category is prefs, custom, letter, mumbo or words. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your BASE file!
Technical Data for BASE File Extension
a base data container file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with BASE files
- Associate the BASE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data container files. Because only the current version supports the latest BASE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available App-specific update.
- To make sure that your BASE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .BASE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
