Opening a BER File
The BER file type is primarily associated with OpenSSL.
What is a BER file?
This format is used in several areas:
How to open BER files
You need a suitable software like OpenSSL to open a BER file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BER file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BER file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert BER files:
- OpenSSL
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. BER files are often referred to as OpenSSL encodeds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

BER format details:
To view or edit BER files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the BER files looks like this:
Files with the BER extension are quite widely used. This file type is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 25% of all BER files save the data in certificate file format. A digital certificate is a unique, digitally signed document which authoritatively identifies the identity of an individual or organization. Using public key cryptography, its authenticity can be verified to ensure that the software or website you are using is legitimate. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. BER files are between 370 bytes and 36 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. A common filename is response.ber or 20180601_72002402EE3D6960213D9DB01FC7DD8181F72065FF00FF00FF_03164513_34316.ber. These files are often associated with bdff, report, ocsp, acba, fbfb, output and dcff.
- 10% of all BER files lack a unique signature. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 2 KB with most files being between 570 bytes and 7 KB in size. startup-config.ber or stupCfg.ber is a typical file name. Such BER files store data about startupconf and rmbo.
All other BER files (65%) have no consistent format, the following 9 formats can be found: XML. Tagged as chargingcdr, request, mmtel, mavenir, mtas, ccncdr, events, occcdr, sample or data. If you want to find out which format your BER file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .ber file to analyze".
Technical Data for BER File Extension
a ber Binary encoded data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with BER files
- Associate the BER file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open binary encoded data files. Because only the current version supports the latest BER file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available OpenSSL update.
- To make sure that your BER file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .BER file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
