What is a BER file?

BER files mostly belong to OpenSSL. BER files use the Basic Encoding Rules for binary encoding of data to meet ASN.1 standards.
This format is used in several areas:

Certificates and Security: Files can hold certificate information and other cryptographic data as seen with OpenSSL. They follow strict ASN.1 encoding to ensure data integrity.

Network Configuration: Certain BER files store switch configuration details for systems like Netgear Smart Control Center, keeping sensitive network setup data in a binary format.

Telecommunication Records: Some are used as billing event records and SIP call data files. These are common in telecom monitoring by companies such as Ericsson and tools like Wireshark.

Robotic Data: A few BER files contain binary encoded robot commands used in automation systems.

How to open BER files

You need a suitable software like OpenSSL to open a BER file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit BER files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the BER files looks like this:

The BER file ending is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 25% of all BER files save the data in certificate file format. A digital certificate is a unique, digitally signed document which authoritatively identifies the identity of an individual or organization. Using public key cryptography, its authenticity can be verified to ensure that the software or website you are using is legitimate. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. BER files are between 370 bytes and 34 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. These files are often associated with response, bdff, acba, fbfb, ocsp and output.
• 9% of all BER files use the same file format, which have the signature A6 82. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 32 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 5 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: 'Ericsson_OCS_V1_0.0.0.10.32251-3gpp-org and Core_Context_R1A-ericsson-com. Such BER files store data about chargingcdr, ccncdr, eocscdr and occmnb.
