What is a BFL file

BFL files mostly belong to Cleanflight / WinRAR. Files with the BFL extension are not from one single application; they represent different data types depending on their source.

• Blackbox Flight Log Files: These files store flight data recorded by a blackbox flight recorder. They are used for logging aircraft or drone performance and are managed by systems such as those developed by Nicholas Sherlock. More details can be found on the Cleanflight GitHub page.
• Compressed Archive Files: Certain BFL files are binary files compressed with GZIP. They work as archive containers created by vendors like NaviExtras and should be opened with an archive manager that supports GZIP.
• Business File Layout / Business Pro Files: A set of these files is used for business applications, often as encrypted backup files from solutions like NovaBACKUP. They store corporate data and settings that require specific backup software.
• Split Executable Files: A few BFL files are marked as Windows executables (EXE) and serve as parts of split archives created by tools like WinRAR. To use them, you must reassemble the split parts; more info is available on the WinRAR website.

How to open a BFL file

You need a suitable software like Cleanflight / WinRAR to open a BFL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. An BFL file includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 45% of all BFL files start with the magic bytes H Product:Blackbox flight data recorder by Nicholas, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. BFL files can be up to 14 MB in size, but are often around 130 KB - 7 MB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as H Data version:2, H Product:Blackbox flight data recorder by Nicholas Sherlock and H Field I name:loopIteration,time,axisP[0],axisP[1],axisP[2],axisI[0],axisI[1],axisI[2],axisD[0],axisD[1],axisF[0],axisF[1. The following filename is common: LOG00001.BFL or LOG00002.BFL. Such files sometimes refer to newlog.
• 30% of all BFL files save the data in GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 91 KB and 2 MB in size. Some examples of file names are 6r4a1.bfl or 206a1.bfl. Files like these are about subaru.
